On Monday July 22, Filipino leaders from the Bay Area held a rally at the Philippine Consulate to coincide with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) that he delivers to the Philippines Congress. Every year, in Manila, there is a rally called the People’s SONA delivered as the people’s counter narrative to the President’s address. This rally asserts the true State of the Nation from the people’s lived experience and demands for the government to change the conditions of the Filipino people.

Nonprofits running affordable housing in San Francisco will soon be granted the first-right-to-bid priority in the market if there are multi-unit buildings for sale.

Every few years, a Proposition appears on our California ballots that reminds us why we vote and that we really do have a chance to make a difference. Proposition 10, called The Affordable Housing Act, is truly exciting. Why? If passed this November, it would repeal Costa-Hawkins, the 1995 law that limits rent control across the State.

Senior and Disability Action (SDA) hired [people. power. media] to help raise awareness on the conversion of Single Room Occupancy buildings (SROs) into luxury dorms in the San Francisco neighborhood of the South of Market. SRO Resident Leaders and SDA Organizer Tony Robles worked together to share with other residents the signs to look out for for conversions in their buildings.

A San Francisco tenant rights coalition released a report today that shows the impacts of a California law that limits rent control throughout the state.

The Anti-Displacement Coalition authored the report called, “The Cost of Costa-Hawkins.”

It looks like the local initiative that aims to end homelessness in San Francisco will be on the City’s ballot for the upcoming November election.

Four Filipino-American families, including a 4-year-old girl and a 92-year-old grandmother, are being evicted from their homes in the South of Market neighborhood in San Francisco. The De Vera, Bustos, Bonifacio and Mac Coll families have lived in this Natoma Street building for 25 years.

A Proposition is on the June ballot that, if passed would provide free legal representation for tenants facing threat of eviction. The measure, designated as Proposition F is also called "Defend San Francisco Against Evictions." It was put on the ballot through a grassroots effort to gather signatures. That effort resulted in thousands more signatures than needed.

Led by youth and adults from around the State, hundreds of tenants rights activists came together to turn in signatures hoping to qualify the Affordable Housing Act for California’s November ballot. The Affordable Housing Act would repeal the Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act, a law that limits rent control.

Cities and countries have made various attempts to regulate the housing market in order to ensure stability and affordability. Some have been more effective than others and as the housing market evolves, the strategies for regulation keep evolving as well.

Cities, Provinces, States and countries have made significant investments in “affordable” or “social” housing to meet housing needs and to ensure that residents have stability and affordability.

There’s a new bill in California ready to set off the biggest gentrification bomb the state has ever seen. Introduced by California Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco and northern San Mateo County, Senate Bill 827 allows the state to override and approve new zoning for residences around a major transit hubs and corridors-- so buildings near transit can be taller and more dense.

There’s a newly proposed State bill, SB 827, that encourages gentrification in low-income communities throughout California and gives value to landowners and developers with no public benefit in return. It will cause huge social upheaval-- segregation and disinvestment from public transit-- while money flows into the pockets of wealthy people and businesses.
