Stephen Barton was Director of the Housing Department and Deputy Director of the Rent Stabilization Program in Berkeley, California prior to his recent retirement. He is the author of numerous articles on housing policy and economics and is co-author of Common Interest Communities: Private Governments and the Public Interest. He is on the Board of the Bay Area Community Land Trust and is active in the East Bay Chapter of Democratic Socialists of America. Fund Affordable with Windfall Profits Tax from Rents

The Bay Area desperately need money for affordable housing and there is a potential source of funding right in front of them. Rents in the San Francisco Bay Area are among the highest in the country. So let’s tax the rising rents that increase the need for affordable housing in the first place.
